I love the big traditional barbeques that are usually the common fare for patriotic holidays. I mean, how can you not like the platters of barbecued chicken, the abundant racks of sticky ribs, tangy potato salads, pots of baked beans, pitchers of ice cold lemonade, coolers of beer and pies and cakes scattered down the center of the table? Nothing else says America pride quite like the summer feast.
But this year I have decided to have a few people stop in later in the day. I know the early part of the day will be filled with hometown parades and shared picnics. I needed a festive menu that could be enjoyed leisurely, one bit and sip at a time.
I decided on these adorable red, white and blue Fruity Margarita Shots. Any two ounce glass will work, a empty butter shot voitve glass would be perfect. You can use any fruit you choose, for the color scheme here I went with fresh cherries, white peaches, and blueberries. The drink can be mixed in advance, the fruit muddled in the cups right before your guests arrive and everyone can choose the flavor they like as they pour the shooter.
Fresh fruit in bowls, melon balls skewed with prosciutto strips, beef sliders, and caesar salad bites in tall glasses provide hours of nibbling.
For dessert, fill puff pastry cups with lime curd and top with a fresh blackberry. Small scoops of strawberry ice cream in individual spoons will finish the feast.
Now sit back and relax and wait for the fireworks.
- 6 ounces tequila
- 3 ounces fresh lime juice
- 1 ounce triple sec
- 3 tablespoons simple syrup
- 1 cup crushed ice
- Fresh fruit of choice
- Place the tequila, lime juice, triple sec, simple syrup and crushed ice in a shaker. Shake well.
- Crush a small amount of fresh fruit in the bottom of a 2 ounce shot glass. Top with margarita mixture. Garnish with whole fruit.
