The temperatures say summer. The sun is shining and the gardens are in their full glory. But, even though everything says we still have many days left to enjoy our balmy summer weather, a recent walk across a store parking lot showed a few colorful leaves scattered on the pavement. That is all it takes to get me fantasizing about those delicious fall vegetables and spices. You know, the pumpkin, the squash, the sweet potatoes all ramped up with a hit of warm spice…cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and ginger. You can almost smell the intoxicating combination in the oven.
I am not sure how it happens that every year the summer months pass even more quickly than they ever have before, but that is the reality. As I have become aware I have seen more and more of those beautiful colored leaves that have given up their battle on the tree and released to lay drying on the ground. Yes, fall will be here before we know it.
Once the tease of the fall flavors was planted in my head, I just had to give in and create a cocktail to satisfy the early craving. Sweet Potato Pecan Pie is the choice. Our Sweet Potato Pecan Pie fragrance smells like a combination of sweet potatoes, brown sugar, and fragrant spice blend topped with toasted pecans and baked in a buttery crust. Yes, I think that sounds good enough to drink.
But, the temperatures are still hovering in the upper 80’s. The hot summer breeze is inviting me to sit on the porch. To satisfy my fall craving and cool off at the same time, how about a Adult Sweet Potato Pecan Pie Milkshake.
Invite the kids to join you and just leave out the alcohol. It will still be delicious.
When fall limited edition products hit the shelves at my local Trader Joe’s I always stock up to make sure I have a good supply stashed in my pantry. I quick check confirms that I still have a box of the delicious Pumpkin Bar Baking Mix. That will be perfect.
Now some sweet potato fries for the salty element. Or sprinkle those same fries with a little bit of pumpkin pie spiced mixed with sugar and serve with a marshmallow fluff dipping side. Yum!
Now, don’t get me wrong… I am not willing to let summer end just yet. I intend to savour every single moment of hot days, warm evenings, and summer foods, fragrances and drinks. But, I must admit that I did enjoy my little fall preview.
- ½ cup cooked sweetened sweet potato*
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 scoops good vanilla ice cream
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 2 ounces spiced rum
- 1 ounce hazelnut liqueur
- whipped cream and nutmeg for garnish
- Combine sweet potato, milk, brown sugar, ice cream, spice, rum and liqueur in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into a milkshake glass and garnish with whipped cream and nutmeg.
- *You can use leftover cooked sweet potato or canned.
