How It All Began: The Heart Behind Milkhouse Candles

How It All Began: The Heart Behind Milkhouse Candles

Back in 2002, Janet and Eric Sparrow weren’t trying to start a candle company. They were just two midwestern makers pouring wax in their kitchen and filling up canning jars they picked up at local auctions. What started as a fun hobby (and a few gifts for friends) quickly turned into “Hey, can I get more of those candles?”

And just like that, Milkhouse was born. One small batch at a time.

Their mission was simple.

Create a candle that felt as good as it smelled — one that was safe, clean, and made with care. That same philosophy is still at the heart of everything we do to this day.

We stick to a tried and true recipe: a simple blend of pure beeswax and soy wax from soybeans grown right here in the Midwest. No paraffin, no artificial dyes, and no lead in the wicks — ever. Just a clean, long-lasting burn crafted with intention.

Even our candle vessels are thoughtfully designed — beautiful to display and easy to repurpose when the wax is gone (plant pot, pen holder, snack bowl… you name it).

More than just a candle…

When you choose Milkhouse, we hope our candles bring a little joy to your day. But your support means even more—it helps us keep doing what we love. Every purchase supports our small, Midwest-grown business, the dedicated hands that craft each candle, and our mission to give back to the communities that inspire us.

Because at the heart of every candle is a story—and yours becomes part of ours.

Our candles are more than fragrance — they’re memories, bottled. A flicker that brings you back to your first love, a breeze from your favorite getaway, the warmth of grandma’s kitchen. They're small reminders of who we are, where we've been, and what matters most.

So if you’re here for warm scents, a cleaner home, and products made with purpose — you’re in the right place.

Thanks for being part of our story.
