Reusing candle jars is smart and sustainable. Here are a few easy ways to clean them out, depending on how much wax is left:
Method 1: Freezer Method (best for large chunks of leftover wax)
-
Put the candle jar in the freezer for a few hours.
-
The wax will shrink and pop right out (you can use a butter knife to gently loosen it).
-
Wash with hot, soapy water.
Method 2: Boiling Water Method (best for thin wax layers)
-
Place the jar on a towel.
-
Pour boiling water in, leaving space at the top.
-
The wax will melt, float to the surface, and harden as it cools.
-
Scoop out the hardened wax and wash the jar.
Method 3: Oven Method (best if you have several jars with thin wax layer)
-
Preheat oven to about 180–200°F (low heat).
-
Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment.
-
Place jars upside down on the tray and heat for 10–15 minutes.
-
The wax will drip out — wipe clean with paper towels, then wash.
Tips:
-
Remove labels by soaking in warm soapy water or using a little rubbing alcohol.
-
Don’t pour melted wax down the sink — it can clog drains.
-
Leftover wax can be repurposed in wax warmers or made into fire starters.
